Cold Joints Explained: Why You Never Pour Concrete in Two Batches

What actually happens at the seam
Concrete doesn't "dry", it cures, through a chemical reaction called hydration that begins the moment water hits cement. During the first stretch after mixing, the material is plastic: two loads placed against each other flow together, their aggregate interlocks, and hydration knits them into a single monolithic mass. But once initial set begins, the first batch has formed a rigid crystalline skin. Fresh concrete placed against it can't merge; it can only lean. The result looks like one slab and behaves like two, a butt joint with a fraction of the tensile connection, no aggregate interlock across the plane, and a ready-made path for water. When the slab eventually moves (and all concrete moves), the crack doesn't wander: it follows the cold joint like a perforation line.

Heat accelerates hydration, so the pour window is a moving target. These are the widely used planning ranges for standard mixes, hot days are dramatically less forgiving:

Treat the right-hand column as the gap between finishing one wheelbarrow-load and placing the next against it, not the total pour time. A big slab poured steadily section-by-section stays monolithic as long as every new load lands against still-plastic material.
Cold joints vs. construction joints: not the same thing
Large projects pour in stages all the time, the difference is intent. A construction joint is planned: the pour stops at a formed bulkhead, often with rebar or keyways crossing the plane to transfer load, placed where the design says a joint can live. A cold joint is an accident: it lands wherever you ran out of concrete or time, with no load transfer and no say in its location. If your project genuinely must be staged, form a proper stopping point at a sensible location, don't just let batch one set where the mixer went quiet.
The prevention checklist
Every cold joint traces back to one of four planning failures. First, quantity: apply the 10% waste rule so you never make a mid-pour supply run, the classic cold-joint origin story. Second, supply rate: for anything approaching a cubic yard, ready-mix beats bags precisely because 45 hand-mixed batches arrive over three hours while a truck delivers the whole pour at once, and if you do mix bags, stage them all on site, pre-measured, before the first drop of water. Third, labor: concrete placement is a race; two extra people moving material is cheaper than one seam through a footing. Fourth, weather: in summer, pour at dawn, you can nearly double your working window by dodging the afternoon heat.
If a delay is unavoidable
Caught mid-pour by a broken mixer or a late truck? Damage control, in order: keep the exposed edge alive by covering it and misting lightly (slowing evaporation delays set), rake the edge rough rather than troweling it smooth so the next batch has texture to grip, and if set has clearly begun, apply a bonding agent to the hardened face before continuing. Be honest about what this achieves, a treated joint is better than an untreated one, but it is still a joint. For structural elements like footings, the correct answer to a long delay may be stopping at a formed construction joint or, painful as it is, pulling the short section and re-pouring it whole.
