Why perfect math still comes up short
Geometry assumes conditions that don't exist on a real site. Subgrade dips half an inch and quietly swallows extra concrete. Material clings to the mixer, the wheelbarrow, and the chute. Boards, tiles, and shingles get cut, and offcuts too short to reuse go in the scrap pile. Something breaks in transit. Your tape measure was pulled across a surface that wasn't quite straight. None of these is a mistake, they're the ordinary friction of physical work, and the waste factor is simply that friction priced into the order up front. When to raise the buffer, and when to trim it
Go up (12–20%) when the subgrade is rough or unexcavated, the shape is irregular or curved, the layout is diagonal, it's your first time doing the task, or the material comes in dye lots that can't be matched later (tile, shingles), in that last case, the buffer isn't just for the install, it's your lifetime repair stash. Trim toward 5% only when conditions are genuinely controlled: precise reusable forms you've poured before, dead-flat compacted base, straight rectangular layouts, and materials with no cutting at all. Never go to zero. The buffer exists precisely because the conditions that consume it are the ones you didn't predict.
The cost asymmetry that justifies the rule
The waste rule survives because the two failure modes cost wildly different amounts. Over-ordering costs the price of the extra material, a few bags, a partial box, and unopened goods can often be returned. Under-ordering costs whatever it takes to recover: in concrete, a cold joint (a permanent structural weak plane where a new batch meets a set one, and a ready-made path for the cracks that follow) or an emergency short-load delivery at a premium fee; in tile, a second dye lot that visibly doesn't match; in any material, a second trip, a stalled crew, and a lost afternoon. When one side of a bet costs $15 and the other side can cost a re-pour, you take the $15 side every time. That's not waste, that's the cheapest insurance in construction.
Worked example, start to finish
Say you're pouring six deck footings, each 20 ft × 16 in × 8 in. Each footing is 20 × (16÷12) × (8÷12) = 17.78 ft³; six of them total 106.7 ft³. Apply the rule: 106.7 × 1.10 = 117.3 ft³, or 4.35 cubic yards.
