Why every concrete slab cracks
Concrete cracks because it shrinks. As a fresh slab cures, it loses water and contracts by a small but unavoidable fraction, and since the slab is restrained by friction against its base and by its own reinforcement, that shrinkage pulls it apart at its weakest points. Add temperature swings, which expand and contract the slab daily, and the question stops being whether a slab will crack and becomes where. Good slab work doesn't prevent cracking, it channels it into planned, invisible locations so the visible field stays sound. That reframing is the key to reading your own slab: a crack is not automatically a defect, it's concrete doing exactly what concrete does.

Two quick field tests separate cosmetic from serious. Run a fingernail or a coin across the crack: if it catches on a lip because one side sits higher, that's displacement, the single most important warning sign. And mark the crack ends with a pencil and date them: if the crack lengthens or widens over weeks, it's active and worth a professional look, a stable hairline that hasn't moved in a year is just a scar.
When a crack is actually structural
A handful of signals move a crack from cosmetic to structural: vertical displacement where one side has heaved or settled; active widening that continues month over month; cracks wider than 1/4 inch running the full width of the slab; and any cracking in a load-bearing footing or foundation wall rather than a flatwork slab. These usually point to a cause under the slab, a poorly compacted or washed-out base, frost heave, or expansive soil, which is why chasing the crack itself rarely fixes anything. If several of these appear together, especially on a slab carrying a structure, that's the moment to bring in a structural engineer rather than a tube of filler.
How to control cracking on your next pour
Four decisions do almost all the work. Control joints: tool or saw joints so the slab cracks along them instead of randomly, the common rule spaces joints, in feet, at about 2 to 3 times the slab thickness in inches (a 4-inch slab gets joints every 8 to 12 feet), cut to a quarter of the slab's depth. Thickness and base: pour the correct thickness over a compacted gravel base that drains and won't settle. One continuous pour: avoid cold joints, which are pre-made crack lines, and that starts with ordering enough concrete, so apply the 10% waste rule. Curing: keep the fresh slab damp for several days so it doesn't dry too fast at the surface, the classic cause of early crazing.
