Same quarry, opposite personalities

Both products start as the same blasted rock; the split happens at the screen. #57 is a graded, washed size class, particles from about ¾ to 1 inch with the dust rinsed away, so every stone touches its neighbors at points, leaving connected voids. Load it and it shifts; rain it and water runs straight through. Crusher run (also sold as crush-and-run, ABC, or #411-type blends) keeps everything from 1-inch rock down to powder. Under a plate compactor, those fines pack the voids and the angular stones lock, curing into a surface you can sweep. Choose crusher run for the driving surface of a gravel driveway, garden paths that must stay firm underfoot, shed and paver bases, and pothole repair, anywhere the job description is "compact into a floor." Choose #57 for French drains and drainage trenches, pipe and culvert bedding, the structural middle layer of a 3-layer driveway build, and decorative loose-stone areas. The classic mistake in both directions: a whole driveway of #57 never firms up and forever swallows tires; a deep base of pure crusher run traps water like a clay pan and pumps mud in spring. One modern exception worth knowing: some paver manufacturers now specify an open-graded #57 base with a thin bedding layer instead of compacted fines, if an install sheet governs your patio, its spec outranks any general table, this one included.

Quantities: they order the same, behave differently

Handily, both products plan at about 1.40 tons per cubic yard, the density difference between them is smaller than the quarry-to-quarry variation, so quantity math is identical: a 3-inch layer takes 0.93 cubic yards, about 1.3 tons, per 100 square feet. Two ordering nuances differ. Crusher run compacts roughly 10–15% on installation, so order slightly generous if your depth spec is compacted depth; #57 barely compacts, so what you spread is what you keep. And when a supplier quotes one product per ton and the other per yard, run the tons-to-yards conversion before comparing prices, a "cheaper" unit is often just a smaller one.

Neither product travels under one name, and quoting the wrong regional alias is how the wrong truck arrives.
