Gravel Driveway Layers: The Complete 3-Layer System

A gravel driveway that lasts is built from three compacted layers, largest stone at the bottom: a 4-inch base of #3 crushed stone, a 3–4 inch middle layer of #57 stone, and a 2–3 inch surface of crusher run or #411. Total depth: 9–12 inches, each layer compacted before the next.

Why one thick layer of gravel fails

The tempting shortcut, dump 6 inches of pretty gravel on graded dirt, fails the same way every time. Small stones under a car tire act like ball bearings pressed into soil: they migrate downward into the ground and sideways out of the wheel tracks, and within a couple of seasons the driveway is two muddy ruts with a gravel mohawk down the middle. The layered system solves both physics problems at once. Big angular base stone bridges over soft soil and spreads a tire's point load across a wide footprint; the middle layer fills the voids and locks against the base; and the fine top layer, with its mix of small stone and stone dust, compacts into a tight, almost pavement-like crust that sheds rain toward the edges instead of soaking it into the subgrade.

Two build notes that separate a 20-year driveway from a 2-year one: excavate and grade first (strip topsoil and organic material down to firm subsoil, with a slight crown or cross-slope for runoff), and compact every layer with a plate compactor or roller before spreading the next, loose lifts just remix themselves under traffic.

Worked example: a 50 × 12 ft single-car driveway is 600 sq ft. Built as 4 + 3 + 2 inches, that's 7.41 + 5.56 + 3.70 = 16.7 cubic yards, or about 23.3 tons across the three deliveries. Order the layers separately, they're different products at different prices, and you'll place them weeks apart anyway.

Ordering: yards, tons, and the 5% rule

Quarries quote by the ton, landscape yards often by the cubic yard, the conversion between them runs through density, and 1.40 tons per cubic yard is the planning figure for crushed stone. Add the standard 5% waste allowance for loose aggregates to each layer: gravel settles into subgrade, edges always take more than the tape measure says, and a slightly generous base layer is insurance you'll never regret. If your delivered stone comes with a supplier density on the ticket, use their number, moisture and quarry source move real-world density around the 1.4 average.

Maintenance: the fourth layer is time

Even a properly built gravel driveway is a living surface. Expect to rake stone back out of the lawn a few times a year, knock down washboarding with a drag or box blade as it appears, and top up the surface layer with an inch or two of fresh crusher run every 2–4 years depending on traffic. What you should not ever need to redo is the base, if ruts reach the big stone, the usual culprits are skipped compaction, missing crown, or water running down the drive instead of off it. Fix the drainage before buying more gravel; new stone on a wet base is just future mud.
