How Much Topsoil Do I Need for a Raised Bed?

Raised beds are the easiest soil estimate in landscaping because there's no judgment call about depth, you fill to the frame. Measure the interior length and width in feet, the frame height in inches, and the volume is L × W × (height ÷ 12) cubic feet. The only honest adjustments: fill to about an inch below the rim (soil watering-in will find that level anyway), expect the first season's settling of 10–15% as organic matter breaks down, which is really just the waste-rule logic wearing garden gloves, and if your bed sits on open, healthy ground, roots get bonus depth below the frame for free. Measure inside face to inside face, too, frame lumber is thick, and on a small 4×4 bed, measuring the outer footprint overstates the soil volume by about 1.6 cubic feet at 10 inches deep, close to a full bag.

Bag counts use the 1.5-cubic-foot size most garden soil ships in, rounded up per bed. The table's practical headline: one serious bed is already a bulk-delivery quantity. Eighteen bags is a cart-and-trunk ordeal; a single loose yard is one scoop from the landscape yard, typically fresher, cheaper per cubic foot, and free of eighteen plastic sacks.
What to fill it with (not just topsoil)
Pure topsoil in a frame slumps into a dense, poorly draining brick by midsummer, and skip so-called "fill dirt" entirely, since it's subsoil sold for grading, not growing, and no blend ratio rescues it. The blend that decades of raised-bed growing has settled on is roughly 60% topsoil, 30% compost, 10% aeration (perlite, coarse bark, or rice hulls). For the one-yard 4×8 bed, that's about 16 ft³ of topsoil, 8 of compost, and 3 of aeration material. If you're building the bed from scratch, tall frames (18 in and up) tolerate a cost-saving base layer of coarse organic fill, branches, leaves, wood chips, under the growing mix; just plan to top the bed up as that layer composts down. Each spring thereafter, refreshing 1–2 inches of compost replaces what the bed consumed, on the 4×8, that's a mere 3 to 5 cubic feet, firmly back in bag territory. Litres and the metric gardener
Outside the US, garden soil sells by the litre, and the frame math converts directly: the one-yard 4×8 × 10-inch bed is 0.755 cubic metres, 755 litres, or sixteen 50 L bags.
